This page is a photo journal of our trip to Northern Baffin Island
in the Canadian Arctic, in September 2003, in search of Platysiphon
and Platyarcticus, two brown algae endemic to the Arctic
With not too much to do during the evenings and
plenty of light before the sun finally set, Gary and Chris decided
that hiking the mountains around the Inlet would be a good way
to kill time and keep warm.
The first day's climb was up the left side of
the mountain above. The height gave a good view of our dive
site.
While the dive site was only on the other side
of a peninsula, the pack ice made the trip a little tricky
on more than one occasion.
The view of Z Inlet was incredible from here
and the climb hadn't been that high. Camp was on the tip of
the land on the left which was one side of the channel leading
out of the bay.
The second day of hiking was a little more ambitious.
It was time try a challenge and scale the biggest thing that
could be found.
Shaitie took Gary and Chris to the other side
of the inlet by boat and after clamoring over lose cobble almost
two hours, they were rewarded with a spectacular panoramic
view.
It was easy to look down on the peak which had
been reached the day before. Z Inlet ends on the right, and
our dive site can be seen on the left behind a abandoned airstrip.
A few quick pictures and it was time to head
back before the sun got too low.
